Question:

A traveler intending to perform Umrah in this noble month; I want to fast during the journey from Yemen. Is it permissible for me to fast? May Allah reward you with goodness.

Answer :

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his companions. To proceed:

It is permissible for you to fast during your journey if it does not cause you hardship (mashaqqat). The evidence for this is what Muslim narrated in his Sahih from Hamzah bin ‘Amr al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

“O Messenger of Allah, I find in myself the strength to fast during travel; is there any sin upon me?” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied: “It is a concession (rukhsah) from Allah the Almighty; so whoever takes it, it is good, and whoever prefers to fast, there is no sin upon him.”

However, if fasting is burdensome for you during travel, then it is highly recommended for you to break the fast, based on what was narrated by the two Sheikhs (Bukhari and Muslim) from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was on a journey and saw a man around whom people had gathered and who was being shaded. He asked: ‘What is the matter with him?’ They replied: ‘He is a fasting person.’ Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:”

“It is not an act of righteousness to fast during travel.”

And Allah knows best.
