Then when Saul went out with his soldiers to fight the giants he said to them: "Indeed, Allah is testing you on patience by a river before you which you cross; to distinguish the believer from the hypocrite, so whoever drank from you from the water of the river then he is not of me, and is not fit for striving with me, and whoever did not taste the water then indeed he is of me; because he is obedient to my command and fit for striving, except whoever took a concession and scooped one scoop with his hand then there is no blame upon him." Then when they reached the river they fell upon the water, and exceeded in drinking from it, except a few number from them who were patient on thirst and heat, and sufficed with the scoop of the hand, and at that time the disobedient ones stayed behind. And when Saul crossed the river he and the believing few with him-and they were three hundred and ten-odd men to meet the enemy, and they saw the abundance of their enemy and their equipment, they said: "No capacity for us today with Goliath and his severe soldiers," so those who were certain of meeting Allah answered, reminding their brothers of Allah and His power saying: "How many a few group, believing and patient, overcame by the permission of Allah and His command a many group, disbelieving and aggressive. And Allah is with the patient by His success and His victory, and His good reward."
