He alone is the One who sent down the Qur'an to you: from it are verses clear in meaning, they are the foundation of the Book to which reference is made in case of ambiguity, and whatever opposes it is returned to it; and from it are other verses that are ambiguous (mutashabihat) which carry some meanings, the intended meaning of which is not determined except by joining them to the clear (muhkam). As for those with diseased, deviating hearts, because of their evil intention, they follow these ambiguous verses alone; to stir up doubts among the people so as to misguide them, and to interpret them according to their false doctrines. And none knows the reality of the meanings of these verses except Allah. And those firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We have believed in this Qur'an, all of it has come to us from our Lord on the tongue of His Messenger Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him," and they return its ambiguous [verses] to its clear [verses]. And only those of sound intellect understand, comprehend, and reflect upon the meanings in their correct manner.
