All good foods were lawful for the children of Jacob, peace be upon him, except what Jacob forbade for himself because of an illness that befell him, and that was before the Torah was sent down. Then when the Torah was sent down, Allah forbade for the Children of Israel some foods which were lawful for them; that was because of their injustice and their transgression. Say to them—O Messenger—: "Bring the Torah, and read what is in it if you were truthful in your claim that Allah sent down in it the prohibition of what Jacob forbade for himself, so that you may know the truth of what has come in the Qur'an that Allah did not forbid for the Children of Israel anything before the sending down of the Torah, except what Jacob forbade for himself."
