Then it was from the mercy of Allah to the sincere believers that He cast into their hearts after what had descended upon them of concern and grief a tranquility and confidence in the promise of Allah, and of its trace was a drowsiness that covered a group of them, and they are the people of sincerity and certainty, and another group, their own selves' rescue concerned them specifically, and their determination weakened and they were occupied with themselves, and they thought ill of their Lord, of His religion, and of His Prophet, and they thought that Allah would not complete the matter of His Messenger, and that Islam would not have a standing for it, and for that reason you see them regretful on their going out, some of them saying to others: "Was there for us any choice in the going out for fighting?" Say to them—O Messenger—: "Indeed the matter is all for Allah, for He is the One who decreed your going out and what happened to you," and they hide in themselves what they do not manifest to you of the heartbreak on their going out for fighting, they say: "If there was for us the slightest choice we would not have been killed here." Say to them: "Indeed the terms are in the hand of Allah, and even if you were in your houses, and Allah decreed that you die, those upon whom Allah recorded death would surely have gone out to where they are killed, and Allah did not make that except to test what is in your chests of doubt and hypocrisy, and to distinguish the foul from the good, and the matter of the believer from the hypocrite appears to the people in words and actions. And Allah is All-Knowing of what is in the chests of His creation, nothing of their matters is hidden from Him."
