Allah does not punish you-O Muslims-in what you do not intend its tying from the oaths, like the word of some of you: "No by Allah," and "Yes by Allah," but He punishes you in what you intended its tying with your hearts, so if you did not fulfill the oath then the sin of that Allah erases it by what you put forward of what Allah legislated for you as an expiation of feeding ten needy people, for each needy person half a Sa' from the middle of the food of the people of the land, or their clothing, for each needy person what suffices in the clothing by custom, or the freeing of a slave from the bondage, so the swearer who did not fulfill his oath is given choice between these three matters, then whoever did not find anything of that then upon him is the fasting of three days. Those are the expiations for the non-fulfillment of your oaths, and preserve-O Muslims-your oaths: by avoiding the swearing, or the fulfillment if you swore, or the expiation if you did not fulfill them. And just as Allah clarified for you the judgment of the oaths and the release from them He clarifies for you the rulings of His religion; so that you may thank Him on His guidance to you to the straight path.
