Answer
The basic principle is the desirability of raising hands in supplication except in cases specifically excluded by evidence, such as instances where the Prophet ﷺ did not raise his hands, like during the sermon prayer and while the congregation says amen on Fridays. Once this is established, the congregant should not raise his hands while saying amen to the Imam’s prayer during the sermon, as there is no solid evidence for this practice, despite the many Fridays the Prophet ﷺ observed.
As for raising the hands during the supplication between the calls to prayer, it is sunnah, based on the general statement of the Prophet ﷺ: “Indeed, Allah is Shy and Generous, He feels shy when a man raises his hands to Him to return them empty and disappointed.” This hadith was reported by Ahmad.
