Fourth Issue: Water Mixed with Pure Substances

Translated by : Reza Ervani bin Asmanu

If water mixes with a pure substance, such as tree leaves, soap, al-ushnaan (a type of plant), sidr (lotus leaves), or other pure materials, and these substances do not dominate the water, the correct opinion is that the water remains pure and can be used for purification from both minor and major impurities.

This is because Allah, the Exalted, said:

“And if you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you comes from relieving himself, or you have touched women and cannot find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands.” (Surah An Nisa, 4:43)

The term water (al-maa’) in this verse is mentioned in an indefinite form (nakirah) in the context of negation, which includes all types of water without distinguishing between pure water and water mixed with pure substances.

Additionally, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the women preparing his daughter’s body for burial:

“Wash her three or five times, or more if you see fit, using water and sidr (lotus leaves). In the final wash, use camphor or something containing camphor.” (Mutually agreed upon: Sahih Bukhari, Hadith Numbers 1253, 1258, 1259; Sahih Muslim, Hadith Number 939)

Supplementary Material

What about pure substances that are usually in liquid form, such as oil or honey, or water mixed with substances that alter its properties?

From At Tadzhiib fii Adilati Matnil Ghayati wat Taqriib

Pure Substances (Ath-Thaahiraat): These are pure items that usually dissolve in water and cannot be separated from it after mixing, such as musk or salt. Such mixtures do not purify because they are no longer called “water” in this case.

Allahu Ta’ala ‘A’lam
