Indeed, gaining understanding in religion (Tafaqquh fid-din) is among the best deeds and most praiseworthy qualities. Its virtue is clearly indicated by the texts of the Qur’an and the Sunnah, which also encourage learning it. Among these texts is the saying of Allah, the Exalted:

“And it is not for the believers to go forth [to battle] all at once. For there should separate from every division of them a group [remaining] to obtain understanding in the religion and warn their people when they return to them that they might be cautious.” (Surah At-Taubah, 9:122)

Also, the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):

“Whoever Allah wills good for, He grants him understanding of the religion.” (Sahih al-Bukhari No. 71 and Sahih Muslim No. 1037)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) linked all good to understanding religion, which demonstrates its importance, its high rank, and noble status. He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:

“The people are like ores; the best of them in the pre-Islamic period (Jahiliyyah) will be the best of them in Islam, provided they gain understanding of the religion.” (Sahih al-Bukhari No. 3383, and this wording is from him, and Sahih Muslim No. 2638)

Thus, understanding (Fiqh) in religion holds a lofty position in Islam, and its reward is great. This is because when a Muslim gains deep knowledge of their religion, knows their rights and obligations, they worship their Lord with knowledge and insight, which leads them to goodness and happiness in both this world and the Hereafter.
