And Give Glad Tidings to Those Who Are Patient

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

والصلاة والسلام على نبينا محمد، وعلى آله وصحبه أجمعين، أما بعد.

May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions. Amma ba’du.

وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ * الَّذِينَ إِذَا أَصَابَتْهُمْ مُصِيبَةٌ قَالُوا إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ * أُولَئِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَلَوَاتٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ وَرَحْمَةٌ وَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُهْتَدُونَ [البقرة: ١٥٥ – ١٥٧]

“And give glad tidings to those who are patient, who, when a disaster strikes them, say: ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we will return.’ They are the ones who will have the blessings and mercy of their Lord, and it is they who are guided.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 155–157)

آية توقفت عندها كثيراً. في أولى لحظات ألمي. أحقاً أن الله تعالى وعد الصابرين هذا الوعد؟؟. ولماذا يمنح الله الصابرين كل هذه المنازل والدرجات والوعود؟؟. ما ميزة الصابرين عن غيرهم؟؟. ولماذا وصفهم بالمهتدين وصلى عليهم؟؟.

This verse made me stop and reflect for a long time, especially in the first moments of my pain. Did Allah Almighty truly make such a promise to those who are patient? Why does Allah grant the patient such high ranks, degrees, and promises? What makes the patient different from others? And why did He describe them as guided and send blessings upon them?

أسئلة كثيرة دارت في خلدي وأنا أسترجع معنى هذه الآية. أتفكر فيها. كل هذا في أولى لحظات ألمي. فتفكرت في الأحوال التي يجب فيها الصبر فوجدت فيما وجدت أن.

Many questions revolved in my mind as I recalled the meaning of this verse, reflecting on it—all of this in the very first moments of my pain. I then thought about the situations that require patience, and I found among them:

البلاء. امتحانٌ من الله عز وجل لعباده. ليعرف الصادق من الكاذب. وليزيد ثبات المؤمن منهم. فينهار الإنسان أمامه. ويلعن القدر واليوم الذي نزل فيه هذا البلاء. ويندب ويبكي، وقد يفقد عقله من هول ما يجد من بلاء. ومن ثم لا يجد أمامه سوى الانتحار ليرتاح من هذا البلاء الذي لا يرفع عنه ولا يجد سبيلاً لرده.

Trials are tests from Allah, the Almighty, for His servants, to distinguish the truthful from the false, and to increase the steadfastness of the believers among them. Yet, a person may collapse before it, curse fate and the day the trial descended, lament and weep, and perhaps even lose their mind due to the severity of what they face. Then, they may see no way out except suicide to escape from the trial that neither lifts from them nor can be repelled.

الهم. نيران تستعر في القلب. وتؤرقه وتضيع الوقت. وتشيب الرأس وتزيد الغضب. الهم. عدوٌ للإنسان مرافقٌ له في حله وترحاله. بسبب الهم يخسر الإنسان علاقاته. بسبب الهم يدمر الإنسان نفسه. يحاول الخروج منه بشتى الطرق. المهدئات والمسكنات والمنشطات. وفي النهاية يصل الأمر به إلى الانتحار. للخروج من هذا الهم الذي نغص عليه لذة حياته.

Anxiety is a fire burning in the heart, disturbing peace, wasting time, turning hair gray, and increasing anger. Anxiety is a constant enemy to a person wherever they are. Because of anxiety, a person loses relationships; because of anxiety, a person destroys themselves. They try to escape it in various ways—tranquilizers, painkillers, stimulants—but in the end, it can lead to suicide, just to escape the anxiety that has spoiled the joy of life.

الحزن. تتنوع أشكاله وطرائقه. حتى يشحب الوجه. وتتغير الوجنات. ويعتصر القلب ألماً. فيلجأ الإنسان إلى تفريغ طاقة حزنه بطرق شتى. بالحرام والحلال. فقد يذهب لشرب المسكر كي يعيش في العالم الآخر. أو يعتكف على الأفلام المحرمة. أو يمارس الحرام. ظناً منه أن شعوره باللذة والشهوة سينسيه ما به من حزن. فيزيد عليه الحزن. ويزداد هو تغيرًا إلى الأسوأ. يقول الحياة ملل. الحياة ما فيها خير. ما تضحك لحظة إلا وتبكي ساعة. فيزداد حزنه بفقد حبيب. أو إخفاق في الحياة. فيجد أن أفضل طريق له للراحة. هو الانتحار.

Sadness comes in many forms and ways—until the face grows pale, the cheeks change, and the heart writhes in pain. A person may seek to discharge the energy of their sadness through various means, both lawful and unlawful. They might drink alcohol to live in another world, seclude themselves with forbidden films, or commit sinful acts—thinking that the pleasure and desire will make them forget their sadness. Yet, the sadness only deepens, and they change for the worse. They say, “Life is boring; life has no good. You don’t laugh for a moment except to cry for an hour.” Their sadness grows from losing a loved one or failing in life, until they see suicide as the best way to find rest.

تأملت هذه الأصناف الثلاثة. فوجدت أن هناك صنفًا رابعًا هو مغيب عن الواقع. قسم لم يتأثر بهذه الأصناف الثلاثة. بل زاد من قوته وثباته وإيمانه. إنه قسمٌ. نزل به بلاءٌ. يكاد يزلزل أركانه. وقد يجعله يفقد الكثير من إيمانه إن لم يكن صادقاً. يبتلي الله هذا المؤمن في دينه وماله ونفسه وأهله وعرضه. كما قال عليه الصلاة والسلام: ما يزال البلاء بالمؤمن والمؤمنة في نفسه وولده وماله حتى يلقى الله وما عليه خطيئة.

I reflected on these three categories and found there is a fourth group, absent from the reality of the first three. This group is unaffected by them but instead grows in strength, steadfastness, and faith. They are the ones upon whom a trial has descended that nearly shakes their very foundations and could make them lose much of their faith if they are not truthful. Allah tests this believer in his religion, wealth, self, family, and honor, as the Prophet ﷺ said: “Trials will continue to befall the believing man and woman in themselves, their children, and their wealth until they meet Allah with no sin upon them.”

هكذا المؤمن. يستمر البلاء نازلاً صاعداً فيه. وكلما ازداد إيمانه ازداد بلاؤه. فكما قال عليه السلام: يبتلى الرجل على حسب دينه. ويستمر صابراً وهو يقول: لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله العلي العظيم، اللهم أجرني في مصيبتي وأخلف لي خيراً منها. فيرتاح كيانه. ويرضى فؤاده. ويقول: يا رب إني بإيماني وقرآني. سأصبر أمام كل بلاء قد ينزل بي. يا رب. إني أريد أن أكون ممن قلت فيهم:

Such is the believer—trials come down upon him and rise again. The stronger his faith, the greater his trial, as the Prophet ﷺ said: “A man is tested according to the level of his religion.” He remains patient, saying: “There is no might and no power except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great. O Allah, reward me in my calamity and replace it for me with something better.” His whole being finds relief, his heart is content, and he says: “O Lord, with my faith and my Qur’an, I will endure every trial that may befall me. O Lord, I want to be among those of whom You said:

وَجَزَاهُمْ بِمَا صَبَرُوا جَنَّةً وَحَرِيرًا [الإنسان: ١٢].

‘And He will reward them for what they patiently endured with a Garden [in Paradise] and [garments of] silk.’ (Surah Al-Insan 12)

هذا هو المؤمن. وهذا هو الصبر. منزلة عظيمة. غابت عن الكثير منا. وتذكرها القليل. فوضعوا قوله تعالى:

This is the believer, and this is patience—a great rank that many of us have forgotten, and only a few remember. They put before their eyes the saying of Allah, the Exalted:

وَالصَّابِرِينَ فِي الْبَأْسَاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ وَحِينَ الْبَأْسِ أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُتَّقُونَ [البقرة: ١٧٧]

“And [they are] those who are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. It is they who have been true, and it is they who are the righteous.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 177)

أمام أعينهم. ونبراساً لاشتعال همتهم. فلنكن من الصابرين على ما ينزل بدنيا الكدر والتعب من بلاء ونصب. ننل أعلى المراتب والغرف في جنان الفردوس الأعلى. والسلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته.

before their eyes as a light to ignite their resolve. So let us be among those who are patient with whatever trials, hardships, and fatigue descend in this troubled world, so that we may attain the highest ranks and chambers in the gardens of Al-Firdaus Al-A‘la. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
