Quranic Verses about Seeing Allah in the Hereafter (Part Two)

والآيةُ الثانيةُ: يونس (٢٦)

Second Verse: (Surah Yunus, verse 26)

{للذين أحسنوا الحسنى وزيادة} (يونس:٢٦)

For those who do good is the best reward—and more. (Surah Yunus, verse 26).

قال أهلُ التفسيرِ: الزيادةُ النظرُ إلى وجهِ الله، ويؤيِّدُ هذا التفسيرَ ما رواهُ مسلمٌ عن صهيبٍ الروميِّ – رضيَ اللهُ عنه – أنَّ رسولَ اللهِ – صلى اللهُ عليه وسلم – تلا هذه الآية: {لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا الْحُسْنَى وَزِيَادَةٌ}.

Exegetes explain that the “more” refers to gazing upon the Face of Allah. This interpretation is supported by a report in Muslim from Suhayb al-Rumi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited: {لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا الْحُسْنَى وَزِيَادَةٌ}.

وقال: (إذا دخلَ أهلُ الجنةِ الجنَّةَ، وأهلُ النارِ النارَ، نادى مُنادٍ: يا أهلَ الجنةِ، إنَّ لكم عندَ اللهِ موعدًا يُريدُ أن يُنجزَكموه. فيقولون: وما هو؟ ألم يُثقِّلْ موازينَنا، ويُبيِّضْ وجوهَنا، ويُدخِلْنا الجنةَ، ويُزحزِحْنا عنِ النارِ؟ قال: فيكشفُ لهمُ الحجابَ، فينظرون إليه، فواللهِ ما أعطاهُمُ اللهُ شيئًا أحبَّ إليهم من النظرِ إليه، ولا أقرَّ لأعينِهم).

He then said: “When the people of Paradise enter Paradise, and the people of Hell enter Hell, a caller will announce: ‘O people of Paradise! You have a promise with Allah which He wishes to fulfill for you.’ They will say: ‘What is it? Has He not made our scales heavy, brightened our faces, admitted us into Paradise, and kept us away from Hell?’ Then the veil will be lifted for them, and they will look at Him. By Allah, He has not given them anything more beloved to them than looking at Him, nor anything more soothing to their eyes.” (Hadith narrated by Imam Muslim).

والآيةُ الثالثةُ: القيامة (٢٣)

Third Verse: (Surah al Qiyamah, verse 23)

{وجوه يومئذ ناضرة إلى ربها ناظرة} (القيامة:٢٣)

That Day, faces will be radiant—looking at their Lord. (Surah al Qiyamah, verse 23).

وهي واضحةُ الدلالةِ؛ فالمؤمنون يومَ القيامةِ وجوهُهم نضرةٌ مسرورةٌ تنظرُ إلى وجهِ اللهِ سبحانهُ، فيزيدُها ذلك نضارةً وسرورًا.

This verse is explicit in its indication: on the Day of Resurrection, the faces of the believers will be radiant and delighted as they gaze upon the Face of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, and that very vision increases their radiance and joy.

والآيةُ الرابعةُ: المطففين (١٥)

Fourth Verse: (Surah al Mutaffifin, verse 15)

{كلا إنهم عن ربهم يومئذ لمحجوبون} (المطففين:١٥)

No indeed! That Day they (the disbelievers) will be veiled away from their Lord. (Surah al Mutaffifin, verse 15).

وهي أيضًا واضحةُ الدلالةِ؛ إذْ أخبرَ سبحانهُ أنَّ الكفّارَ محجوبونَ عن رؤيتِهِ، ممّا يدلُّ بمفهومِ المخالفةِ على أنَّ المؤمنين غيرُ محجوبين.

This verse is also explicit: Allah informs that the disbelievers will be veiled from seeing Him; by contrastive implication, the believers will not be veiled from Him.

حُجَجُ مَن نَفَى رُؤيَتَهُ سبحانه

Arguments of Those Who Deny the Beatific Vision (Seeing Allah)

وفي المقابلِ كان للقائلينَ بنفيِ الرؤيةِ بعضُ الظواهرِ التي استشهدوا بها، وذلكَ في خمسِ آياتٍ:

On the other hand, those who deny the vision cite certain apparent evidences, found in five verses of the Quran.

{وإذ قلتم يا موسى لن نؤمن لك حتى نرى الله جهرة فأخذتكم الصاعقة وأنتم تنظرون} (البقرة ٥٥)

And [remember] when you said, “O Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allah plainly.” Then the thunderbolt seized you while you were looking on. (Surah al Baqarah, verse 55).

{فقد سألوا موسى أكبر من ذلك فقالوا أرنا الله جهرة فأخذتهم الصاعقة بظلمهم} (النساء ١٥٣)

Indeed, they asked Moses for even greater than that and said, “Show us Allah plainly,” so the thunderbolt seized them for their wrongdoing. (Surah an Nisa, verse 153).

حيثُ قالوا: إنَّ معاقبةَ اللهِ لبني إسرائيلَ بإرسالِ الصاعقةِ عليهم دليلٌ على عِظَمِ ما طلبوا من سؤالِهم رؤيتَه، ولو لم تكنْ رؤيتُه مستحيلةً بل ومحرّمةً لما كانَ لعقابِهم وجهٌ.

They argue that Allah’s punishment of the Children of Israel by sending a thunderbolt indicates the gravity and reprehensibility of their request to see Him; had such a vision not been impossible—and indeed forbidden—there would have been no justification for punishing them.

وهو استدلالٌ مَنقوضٌ بدليلِ أنَّ موسى – عليهِ السلام – سأل ربَّهُ الرؤيةَ فلم يُرسِلِ اللهُ عليهِ صاعقةً ولم يُعاقِبْه، بل بيَّنَ له أنَّهُ لن يراهُ في هذه الدنيا بسببِ ضعفِهِ عن تحمُّلِ ذلك، وضربَ لهُ مثلًا بالجبلِ على عظمتِه كيفَ لمّا تجلّى لهُ تناثرَ واضمحلَّ.

However, this inference is invalid. Moses—peace be upon him—himself requested to behold his Lord, yet Allah did not send a thunderbolt upon him nor punish him. Rather, He clarified that Moses would not see Him in this world due to human incapacity, and He gave the example of the mighty mountain that crumbled when Allah manifested Himself to it.

فدلَّ ذلكَ على أنَّ العقوبةَ التي لحقتْ ببني إسرائيلَ ليست جرّاءَ سؤالِهم رؤيتَهُ سبحانه، وإنّما لأنّهم سألوها وقد علموا امتناعَها في الدنيا بما حدثَ لموسى ممّا بلغَهم إيّاه، وزيادةً على ذلكَ فقد كان سؤالُهم بمثابةِ شرطٍ يتوقّفُ عليهِ إيمانُهم: {لن نؤمن لك حتى نرى الله جهرة}، وهو ما استدعى عقوبتَهم وزجرَهم بأشدِّ العقوباتِ.

Thus it becomes clear that the punishment that befell the Children of Israel was not merely for asking to see Him, but because they demanded it even though they knew it was impossible in this world—based on what had reached them regarding Moses’s experience—and because they made it a condition for belief: “We will never believe you until we see Allah plainly.” That attitude warranted their punishment and the severest rebuke.
