This article about the Prophet under the guardianship of Abdul Muttalib is part of the Life of Prophet Muhammad

When Aminah, the mother of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), passed away, he was taken into the care of his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, who showed him a tenderness that he had not shown even to his own children.

Ibn Ishaq reported from al-Abbas ibn Abdullah ibn Ma‘bad, from some of his family, who said: “Abdul Muttalib had a special mat placed for him in the shade of the Ka‘bah, and none of his sons would dare sit on it out of respect for him. But the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), while still a child, would come and sit on it. His uncles would try to pull him away, but Abdul Muttalib would say: ‘Leave my grandson alone.’”

He would then pat his back and say: “This grandson of mine will have a great destiny.”

Abu Nu‘aim narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) a similar account. He added: “Let my grandson sit, for he senses something within himself. I hope that he will reach a level of honor no Arab has attained before him or after him.”

Ibn Sa‘d and Ibn Asakir narrated from al-Zuhri, Mujahid, Nafi‘, and Ibn Jubair, who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) would sit on his grandfather’s mat, and his uncles would try to move him away. But Abdul Muttalib would say: “Leave my grandson, for he is being accompanied by an angel.”

A group from Banu Mudlij said to Abdul Muttalib: “Guard him well, for we have never seen feet more resembling those in the Maqam (of Ibrahim) than his.”

Abdul Muttalib also said to Umm Ayman: “O Barakah, take good care of him and do not neglect him, for the People of the Book claim that he is the Prophet of this Ummah.”

Al-Muhamili narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: I heard my father say: “Abdul Muttalib had a special seat in the Hijr (near the Ka‘bah) that no one dared sit on. Harb ibn Umayyah and others would sit around it, but not on it. One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), still a young boy who had not reached puberty, came and sat on it. A man pulled him away, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) cried. Abdul Muttalib—by then blind—asked: ‘Why is my grandson crying?’ They said: ‘He wanted to sit on the special seat, but they stopped him.’ Abdul Muttalib said: ‘Let my grandson sit there, for he feels within himself a nobility. I hope he will reach an honor no Arab has ever attained before him or after him.’”
