This article about the Prophet under the guardianship of Abdul Muttalib is part of the Life of Prophet Muhammad category
Al-Baladhuri narrated from al-Zuhri and Muhammad ibn al-Saib that whenever food was brought to Abdul Muttalib, he would sit the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) beside him, sometimes on his lap, and he would give him the best portion of the food. He was tender and caring toward him. If food was brought while the Messenger of Allah was absent, he would not touch it until the boy was brought to him.
Abdul Muttalib used to spread a mat for himself in the shade of the Ka‘bah. His sons would sit around it until he came out, and when he did, they would stand at his head with his servants out of respect. The young Muhammad would come and sit on the mat. His uncles would try to move him away, but Abdul Muttalib would say: “Leave my grandson alone. What do you want from him? He has a great destiny.” Then he would kiss his head, wipe his chest, and delight in his words and the signs he observed in him.
Abu Nu‘aim narrated from Muhammad ibn Umar al-Aslami from his teachers who said: “One day Abdul Muttalib was in the Hijr with a bishop from Najran. The bishop said to him: ‘We find in our scriptures the description of a prophet who remains to come from the descendants of Ishmael. This town will be his birthplace, and his attributes are such and such.’ Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) appeared. The bishop looked at him, at his eyes, his back, and his feet, and said: ‘This is him. Who is he to you?’ Abdul Muttalib replied: ‘He is my son.’ The bishop said: ‘No, for we find that his father will not be alive.’ Abdul Muttalib said: ‘He is my grandson. His father died while his mother was still pregnant with him.’ The bishop replied: ‘You have spoken the truth.’ Abdul Muttalib then said to his sons: ‘Take care of your nephew. Do you not hear what is being said about him?’”
Al-Bukhari in his Tarikh, Ibn Sa‘d, and al-Hakim (who authenticated it) narrated from Kundair ibn Sa‘id ibn Haywah (also called Huydah), from his father, and al-Bayhaqi narrated from Mu‘awiyah ibn Huydah, that one of them said: “I set out to perform Hajj in the pre-Islamic period,” while the other said: “I set out to perform Umrah in the pre-Islamic period.” They said: “We saw a tall old man circumambulating the Ka‘bah while saying:
‘Return to me my rider, Muhammad.
Return him, my Lord, and make it a favor for me with You.’
They asked about him and were told: “This is the leader of Quraysh, Abdul Muttalib. He owns many camels. When some go missing, he sends his sons to search for them. If they fail, he sends his grandson, and he never sends him on a task except that he succeeds. He has now sent him on a task that his sons could not accomplish, but he has been delayed.” They said: “It was not long before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came back with the camels. Abdul Muttalib said to him: ‘My son, I was so grieved over you. Do not leave me ever again.’”
Ibn al-Jawzi narrated from Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: “I used to look after the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). One day I became distracted from him, and suddenly I found Abdul Muttalib standing over him saying: ‘O Barakah!’”
I replied: “Here I am.” He said: “Do you know where I found my grandson?” I replied: “I do not know.” He said: “I found him with some boys near the sidrah tree. Do not neglect him, for the People of the Book claim that he is the Prophet of this Ummah, and I do not trust them with him.”
Alhamdulillah, this completes the two-part article series.
