Sujud Syukur (Prostration of Gratitude) in the Prophetic Biography (Part Two)

ـ روى الترمذي في سننه، والبيهقي في الدلائل، والذهبي في “تاريخ الإسلام”، وابن القيم في “زاد المعاد” وغيرهم، عن البراء بن عازب رضي الله عنه قال:
Narrated by At-Tirmidhi in his Sunan, Al-Bayhaqi in Ad-Dala’il, Adh-Dhahabi in Tarikh al-Islam, Ibn al-Qayyim in Zad al-Ma‘ad, and others, from Al-Bara’ bin ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
(بعث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم خالد بن الوليد إلى أهل اليمن يدعوهم إلى الإسلام، قال البراء: فكنت فيمن خرج مع خالد بن الوليد فأقمنا ستة أشهر يدعوهم إلى الإسلام، فلم يجيبوه،
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Khalid bin Al-Walid to the people of Yemen to call them to Islam. Al-Bara’ said: I was among those who went out with Khalid bin Al-Walid. We stayed there for six months; he invited them to Islam, but they did not respond.”
ثم إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بعث علي بن أبي طالب، وأمره أن يُقْفِل خالداً (يرجعه ويردّه)، وقال: مُرْ أصحاب خالد من شاء منهم أن يعقّب معك فليعقّب ومن شاء فليقبل.
Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Ali bin Abi Talib and ordered him to recall Khalid. He said: “Tell the companions of Khalid: whoever wishes to remain with you may remain, and whoever wishes to return may return.”
قال البراء: فكنت فيمن عقّب (بقي) مع عليّ، فلما دنونا من القوم خرجوا إلينا فصلى بنا علي، ثم صفنا صفاً واحداً، ثم تقدم بين أيدينا، وقرأ عليهم كتاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فأسلمَت همدان جميعاً،
Al-Bara’ said: I was among those who remained with Ali. When we approached the people, they came out to meet us. Ali led us in prayer, then we lined up in one row. He advanced ahead of us and read to them the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then the entire tribe of Hamdan embraced Islam.
فكتب علي إلى رسول الله بإسلامهم، فلما قرأ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الكتاب خرَّ ساجداً، ثم رفع رأسه فقال: السلام على همدان، السلام على همدان).
Ali wrote to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informing him of their acceptance of Islam. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ read the letter, he immediately performed Sujud Syukur (Prostration of Gratitude). Then he raised his head and said: “Peace be upon Hamdan, peace be upon Hamdan.”
ـ عن نفيع بن الحارث الثقفي أبو بكرة رضي الله عنه قال:
From Nufai‘ bin Al-Harith Ath-Thaqafi, Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
(كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا أتاهُ أمرٌ يسرُّهُ أو بُشِّرَ به خرَّ ساجدًا شُكراً للَّهِ تبارك وتعالى) رواه ابن ماجه وحسنه الألباني.
“Whenever something pleasing came to the Prophet ﷺ or he was given glad tidings, he would immediately perform Sujud Syukur (Prostration of Gratitude) to Allah, Blessed and Exalted.” (Hadith narrated by Ibn Majah, graded hasan by Al-Albani).
ـ عن عبد الرحمن بن عوف رضي الله عنه قال:
From Abdurrahman bin ‘Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
(أتيتُ النبيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو ساجدٌ فأطال السجود، قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: أتاني جبريلُ قال: من صلَّى عليكَ صليتُ عليه، ومن سلَّمَ عليك سلَّمتُ عليه، فسجدتُ للهِ شكراً) رواه الحاكم وصححه الألباني.
“I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was in prostration, and he prolonged his prostration. He ﷺ said: ‘Jibril came to me and said: Whoever sends blessings upon you, I will send blessings upon him; and whoever greets you, I will return his greeting.’ So I performed Sujud Syukur (Prostration of Gratitude) to Allah.” (Hadith narrated by Al-Hakim, authenticated by Al-Albani).
ـ عن سعد بن أبي وقاص رضي الله عنه قال:
From Sa‘d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
(خرجنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من مكة نريد المدينة، فلما كنا قريبا من عزوراء نزل ثم رفع يديه فدعا الله ساعة ثم خرَّ ساجداً فمكث طويلا ثم قام فرفع يديه ساعة، ثم خرَّ ساجداً فعله ثلاثا
“We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Makkah heading toward Madinah. When we came near to the place of ‘Azwara, he descended, raised his hands and supplicated to Allah for a long time. Then he prostrated and remained in prostration for a long while. Then he rose, raised his hands and supplicated for some time, then prostrated again. He did this three times.”
وقال: إني سألت ربي، وشفعت لأمتي، فأعطاني ثلث أمتي، فخررتُ ساجداً لربي شكرا، ثم رفعت رأسي فسألت ربي لأمتي، فأعطاني ثلث أمتي، فخررت ساجداً لربي شكراً، ثم رفعت رأسي فسألت ربي لأمتي، فأعطاني الثلث الآخر، فخررت ساجداً لربي) رواه أبو داود وضعفه الألباني، وحسنه ابن حجر.
He then said: “I asked my Lord and interceded for my Ummah, and He granted me one-third of my Ummah. So I performed Sujud Syukur (Prostration of Gratitude) to my Lord. Then I raised my head, asked my Lord for my Ummah again, and He granted me another third of my Ummah. So I performed Sujud Syukur to my Lord. Then I raised my head, asked my Lord for my Ummah again, and He granted me the last third. So I performed Sujud Syukur to my Lord.” (Hadith narrated by Abu Dawud, graded weak by Al-Albani, but graded hasan by Ibn Hajar).
عن أنس رضي الله عنه:
From Anas (may Allah be pleased with him):
(أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بُشِّرَ بحاجة فخرَّ لله ساجداً) رواه ابن ماجه وحسنه الألباني.
“Indeed, when the Prophet ﷺ received glad tidings about something, he immediately performed Sujud Syukur (Prostration of Gratitude) to Allah.” (Hadith narrated by Ibn Majah, graded hasan by Al-Albani).
