The Jokes and Humor of the Prophet ﷺ (Part Two)

This article about the Jokes and Humor of the Prophet is part of the Life of Prophet Muhammad category
The Prophet ﷺ also joked with his relatives. He once came to Ali, his cousin and the husband of his daughter, when Ali was lying down in the mosque. The Prophet had asked Fatimah radhiyallahu ‘anha about him, and she replied: “There was something between me and him, so he got upset with me and left.” The Prophet ﷺ then said to him:
“Get up, O Abu Turab, get up, O Abu Turab.” (Hadith narrated by Bukhari and Muslim).
As for his jokes with his family, his playfulness with his wives and daughters, they had a large share of his noble character in this important aspect. He used to race with ‘Aishah radhiyallahu ‘anha, and allow her to play with her friends. ‘Aishah radhiyallahu ‘anha said:
“I used to play with dolls in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and I had friends who played with me. Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered, they would hide from him, but he would allow them to join me so they could play with me.” (Hadith narrated by Bukhari).
As for children, the Prophet’s ﷺ care and his playful kindness towards them was clearly evident in what happened with Hasan and Husain radhiyallahu ‘anhuma. From Abdullah bin Shaddad, from his father, he said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us during one of the night prayers while carrying Hasan or Husain. He advanced and put the child down, then he said the takbir and began the prayer. During the prayer, he made a prostration that lasted a very long time. My father said: I raised my head and saw the child on the back of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was prostrating. I returned to my prostration. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the prayer, the people said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, you prolonged one of your prostrations so much that we thought something had happened, or that revelation was being sent down to you.’ He said: ‘None of that happened. Rather, my grandson was riding on my back, and I did not want to disturb him until he had finished what he wanted.’” (Hadith narrated by Ahmad and An-Nasa’i, authenticated by Al-Albani).
From these examples it becomes clear that there is spaciousness in our great religion, and that there is no contradiction between seriousness and occasional cheerfulness. Just as in Islam there is nourishment for hearts and souls, and guidance for the well-being of the body, so too does it contain that which delights the soul and brings joy and happiness.
Alhamdulillah, this completes the 2-part article series
