legitimized. It is arguable, if not self-evident, that actions of certain states, chief among them the US, surpass complicity to co-perpetration.
The crimes committed in Gaza today, including genocide, have been principally made possible by a global imperial order that has shielded and normalized a situation of Israeli colonization, forced displacement, and apartheid in Palestine for over 77 years.
International and UN accountability mechanisms cannot act independently of their member states. They are bound by the political will of (the most powerful) states; and in the Palestinian case, that will has been overwhelmingly employed toward shielding the Israeli regime and ensuring its continued impunity. These powerful states have effectively played a central role in blocking accountability against the Israeli regime and aiding, encouraging and maintaining its crimes in Gaza.
True accountability in the face of these crimes requires not only the enforcement of a ceasefire and the dismantling of the Israeli regime, but also the sanctioning and prosecution of complicit states that have enabled and sustained its actions. In the absence of political will from states, challenging the hegemony of the Israeli regime and its complicit allies has to come from below. Palestinian resistance, combined with the sustained and strategic efforts of the global solidarity movement, is the only way through which the genocidal war on the Gaza Strip will end, the Israeli colonial-apartheid regime will be sanctioned and dismantled, and western, colonial states will be held accountable for their complicity.
