O you who have believed in Allah and followed His Messenger Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, if you dealt with a debt to a known time then write it; for the preservation of the wealth and the repulsion of the dispute. And let a man, trustworthy and precise, perform the writing, and let not the one whom Allah taught the writing refuse from that, and let the debtor perform the dictation of what is upon him of the debt, and let him observe his Lord, and not diminish from his debt anything. Then if the debtor was restricted from [managing] because of his squandering and his waste, or he was small or insane, or he was not able to speak because of muteness in him or lack of complete capacity for speech, then let the one who is responsible for the debtor's matter take charge of the dictation, and seek the testimony of two men, Muslims, reached [maturity], of sound mind, from the people of justice. Then if two men are not found, then seek the testimony of a man and two women whose testimony you are pleased with, so that if one of them forgot the other reminded her, and it is upon the witnesses that they answer the one who called them to the testimony, and it is upon them its performance if they were called to it, and do not be weary from the writing of the debt, little or much, to its known time. That is more just in the law of Allah and His guidance, and a greater help on the establishment of the testimony and its performance, and closer to the repulsion of doubt in the kind of the debt, its amount, and its term. But if the matter was a matter of sale and purchase, by taking a commodity and paying its price in the present, then there is no need for writing, and seeking testimony upon that is recommended to prevent dispute and division, and it is obligatory upon the witness and the writer to perform the testimony in its manner and the writing as Allah commanded. And it is not permissible for the owner of the right and the one upon whom is the right to harm the writers and the witnesses, and likewise it is not permissible for the writers and the witnesses that they harm the one who needed their writing or their testimony, and if you did what you were forbidden from then indeed it is a departure from the obedience of Allah, and the consequence of that is befalling you. And fear Allah in all what He commanded you with, and forbade you from, and Allah teaches you all what reforms your world and your hereafter. And Allah of everything is All-Knowing, so nothing is hidden from Him of your affairs, and He will recompense you for that.
