A Journey Through Sahih Muslim:

Al-Lum’ah (The Radiance) in Explaining the Attributes of the Seven (Part 6)

Translated by: Reza Ervani bin Asmanu

The article Al-Lum’ah (Radiance) in Explaining the Attributes of the Seven is included in the Hadith Explanation Category

Fourth: Explanation of the Virtues of These Seven Categories:

In this hadith, there is an explanation of the virtues of these seven categories on the Day of Resurrection, which is the shade provided by Allah Ta’ala for them on that day; the day when there is no shade except His shade. People will have nothing to use as shelter from the heat of the sun and the distress of that day, except for those for whom Allah makes it easy. Thus, such a person becomes happy by attaining one of these attributes due to their need for that shade.

For on that day, which is long in its duration—as Allah Ta’ala says about it:

{The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years} [Al-Ma’arij: 4]

great in its horror:

{O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the [final] Hour is a terrible thing} [Al-Hajj: 1]

and severe in its distress:

{Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white-haired?} [Al-Muzzammil: 17]

the sun will be brought close to the creation. On the authority of Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam said:

“The sun will be brought near the created beings until it is about a mile from them, and the people will be in sweat according to what they have done: for some the sweat will reach their ankles, for some it will reach their knees, and for some the sweat will reach their mouths like a bridle.” (Narrated by Muslim).

And in the Sahihain (Bukhari and Muslim) from the hadith of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him):

“People will sweat on the Day of Resurrection until their sweat goes seventy cubits deep into the earth.”

How fortunate indeed is the one who receives shade on that day!

Fifth: Explanation Regarding the Categories Mentioned in the Hadith:

First: (The Just Ruler):

The Just Ruler: What is meant by “Imam” (leader) is the ruler or sultan, and it also includes judges, as well as anyone who has authority or leadership over others.

Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“Included with him is everyone who is in charge of any of the affairs of the Muslims and acts justly therein. This is supported by the narration of Muslim from the hadith of Abdullah bin ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) in a marfu’ form (attributed to the Prophet): ‘Indeed, those who are just will be in the presence of Allah upon pulpits of light to the right of the Most Merciful—those who are just in their judgment, their families, and what they are put in charge of.’ The best explanation of ‘the just’ is: the one who follows the command of Allah Ta’ala by putting everything in its proper place, without excess (ifrath) and without negligence (tafrith).” (See: “Al-Fath”, hadith (660)).

The just ruler is mentioned first due to the general benefit he provides; his benefit is transitive (muta’addi) to others. If he is just, those under him will be just, and the affairs of the people will be rectified. The just person judges between people with fairness, so he does not incline toward desires, does not accept bribes, and does not neglect what Allah has commanded him.
