الخامس: ((ورجلٌ دعتْه امرأةٌ ذات منصبٍ وجمالٍ، فقال: إني أخاف الله)):

Fifth: (A man who is invited [to sin] by a woman of high status and beauty, and he says: ‘Indeed, I fear Allah’):

((دعته))؛ أي: طلبتْه لفعل الفاحشة والزنا بها، وهذه أول الدواعي في هذه الخصلة، فالطلب جاء منها، وثاني الدواعي: أنها ذات منصب؛ أي: أصل وشرف ومال، وثالثها: أنها ذات جمال، ولا يمتنع عن ذلك مع وجود هذه الدواعي إلا قلبٌ عظُم فيه الخوفُ من الله.

  • “She invited him”; meaning: she requested him to commit lewdness and adultery with her. This is the first of the motivators in this quality, for the request came from her. The second motivator: she is a woman of high status; meaning: noble ancestry, honor, and wealth. The third motivator: she is a woman of beauty. No one refrains from that in the presence of these motivators except a heart in which the fear of Allah is great.

• خص المنصب والجمال؛ لشدة رغبة الناس فيهما، وحرصهم عليهما وندرة اجتماعهما في واحد.

  • The specialization of mentioning status and beauty is because of the intensity of people’s desire for them, their keenness for them, and the rarity of these two things gathering in one person.

• قال القرطبي – رحمه الله -: معنى “دعته”: عرضت نفسها عليه؛ أي: للفاحشة، وقول المدعو في مثل هذا الحال: إني أخاف الله، وامتناعه لذلك دليلٌ على عظيم معرفته بالله – تعالى – وشدة خوفه من عقابه، ومتين تقواه، وحيائه من الله – تعالى – وهذا هو المقام اليوسفي”؛ (انظر: “المفهم”، حديث (899)).

  • Al-Qurtubi—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “The meaning of ‘she invited him’ is that she offered herself to him; meaning: for lewdness. The statement of the invited one in such a condition: ‘Indeed, I fear Allah’, and his refusal of that invitation is evidence of his great knowledge of Allah Ta’ala, the intensity of his fear of His punishment, the strength of his piety, and his modesty before Allah Ta’ala. This is what is called Al-Maqam Al-Yusufi (The Station of Joseph).” (See: “Al-Mufhim”, hadith (899)).

• ((إني أخاف الله)): الخوف من الله: هو الرهبة من عذابه، فالذي مَنَعَه من فعل الفاحشة هو الخوف من الله، لا سبب آخر، وقال: (إني أخاف الله)، يحتمل أنه قالها بقلبه؛ ليزجر نفسه، ويحتمل أنه قالها بلسانه؛ ليزجرها – أي: المرأة الطالبة – ليزجرها عن الفاحشة بتذكيرها بالله – تعالى – أو ليعتذر إليها، وقوله ذلك فيه دلالة pada شدة خوفه من الله – تعالى – كما تقدم بيانه.

  • Indeed, I fear Allah: Fear of Allah is the awe of His punishment. Thus, what prevented him from committing that lewd act was the fear of Allah, not any other reason. Regarding the statement (Indeed, I fear Allah), there is a possibility that he said it in his heart to restrain himself, and there is a possibility that he said it with his tongue to prevent the woman—meaning the woman who invited him—from the lewd act by reminding her of Allah Ta’ala, or as a form of excuse for his refusal. That statement indicates the greatness of his fear of Allah Ta’ala as explained previously.
