السؤال

Question:

أنا طالب أدرس في الأردن وقد كنت مقيما بالسعودية وكما تعلمون فليس هناك اختلاط في السعودية ولكن في الأردن يوجد اختلاط، فأحيانا أضطر للتعامل مع طالبات في الجامعة وذلك لكوننا في مجموعة عمل واحدة علما بأنني لا أتعامل معهن إلا بشكل رسمي جدا ولا أتعمد التعامل معهن خارج حدود العمل أبدا.

I am a student studying in Jordan, and I used to live in Saudi Arabia. As you know, there is no gender mixing in Saudi Arabia, but in Jordan, there is. Sometimes, I am forced to interact with female students at the university because we are in the same work group. I interact with them in a very formal manner and never engage with them outside of the work context at all.

Answer:

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله، وعلى آله وصحبه، أما بعد:

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his companions. To proceed:

فالاختلاط بين الرجال والنساء من الأعمال والعوائد المخالفة للشريعة الإسلامية، ولما ينبغي أن يكون عليه المسلمون، وهو من أسباب الشر والفتنة والفساد.

Mixing between men and women is among the practices and customs that are contrary to Islamic Sharia and what Muslims ought to adhere to. It is one of the causes of evil, temptation (fitnah), and corruption.

ونحن ننصحك إذا كنت تريد النجاة أن تبتعد عن أسباب الشر والفتنة، ولا شك أن الاختلاط مع الشابات في المدارس من أسباب وقوع الفساد وانتشار الزنى، ولو حاول الشخص أن يحفظ نفسه فلا بد أن يجد صعوبة بالغة في مثل هذه الأجواء.

We advise you, if you seek salvation, to stay away from the causes of evil and temptation. There is no doubt that mixing with young women in schools is one of the causes of corruption and the spread of fornication. Even if one tries to guard oneself, one will surely face great difficulty in such an environment.

والشخص مهما كان من النزاهة والبراءة إذا كان إلى جانبه في الكرسي الذي هو فيه امرأة، ولا سيما إذا كانت جميلة ومتبرجة لا يكاد يسلم من الفتنة والشر، فكل ما أدى إلى الفتنة والشر فإنه حرام ولا يجوز، لأنه ذريعة إليه.

A person, no matter how chaste and innocent he may be, if he is sitting next to a woman—especially if she is beautiful and dressed immodestly (tabarruj)—he is hardly safe from temptation and evil. Everything that leads to temptation and evil is forbidden, as it is a means to it.

وعلى المرء أن يحاول الدراسة في مكان غير مختلط ولو أداه ذلك إلى السفر إلى بلد آخر، فإن لم يستطع ذلك فعليه بالتحفظ والاعتزال وغض البصر وحفظ الفرج وعدم القرب من النساء قدر المستطاع.

One must strive to study in a non-mixed environment, even if it means traveling to another country. If that is not possible, then he must be cautious, isolate himself, lower his gaze, guard his chastity, and avoid approaching women as much as possible.

وعليه أن يسعى في تقليل المنكر ما وجد إلى ذلك سبيلاً، وأن يختار رفقة صالحة تعينه على غض البصر، وحفظ الفرج.

He should also strive to reduce wrongdoing as much as he can and choose righteous companions who will help him lower his gaze and guard his chastity.
