Question :

A person lives among a group that seeks help from others besides Allah. Is it permissible to pray behind them ? Is it obligatory to migrate away from them ? Is their shirk considered major shirk ? And is supporting them the same as supporting true disbelievers ?

Answer :

If the condition of the people you are living with is as you mentioned — that they seek help from others besides Allah, such as seeking help from the dead, or from the living who are absent, or from trees, stones, stars, and the like — then they are committing major shirk, which takes them out of the fold of Islam. It is not permissible to support them, just as it is not permissible to support disbelievers.

Praying behind them is not valid, nor is it permissible to associate with them or live among them, except for someone who calls them to the truth with clear evidence and hopes that they will respond to him and that their religious condition will improve through him.

Otherwise, it is obligatory for him to leave them and join another group that cooperates in upholding the fundamentals and branches of Islam and reviving the Sunnah of the Prophet.

If he does not find such a group, he should distance himself from all groups, even if he faces hardship, as was narrated from Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said :

“People used to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about good, while I used to ask him about evil out of fear that it would overtake me. So I said:

‘O Messenger of Allah, we were in a period of ignorance and evil, then Allah brought us this good. Will there be any evil after this good?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ I said: ‘Will there be any good after that evil?’ He said: ‘Yes, but it will be tainted.’ I said: ‘What will its taint be?’ He said:

A people who will guide with something other than my guidance and who will follow something other than my Sunnah. You will recognize some of their actions and disapprove of others.’

I said: ‘Will there be any evil after that good?’ He said:

Yes, callers at the gates of Hell. Whoever responds to their call will be thrown into it.’

I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, describe them to us.’ He said:

‘They will be from our own people and speak our language.’

I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what do you command me to do if I live to see that?’ He said:

‘Stick to the main body of the Muslims and their leader.’

I said: ‘What if they have neither a main body nor a leader?’ He said:

‘Then keep away from all those sects, even if you have to bite on the root of a tree until death overtakes you in that state.'” (Agreed upon).

And Allah is the source of success. May Allah’s blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and companions.
