This article, Abdullah bin Mas’ud: The Leader of the Quran Reciters, falls under the category of Sirah of the Companions.

Abdullah bin Mas’ud (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was an intelligent, sharp-minded, and brilliant teacher. He delivered comprehensive lessons, taught his students directly, and sat with them to explain difficult matters, clarify ambiguities, and encourage them to understand, practice, recite, and memorize the Quran.

He emphasized precision in recitation and inspired his students using both motivation (targhib) and caution (tarhib). His words moved hearts, resonated with his warnings, and guided souls to submit to the Quran’s teachings.

Abdullah bin Mas’ud also taught practical aspects of Islam, such as the correct way to pray, fulfill obligations, and attend the mosque. He encouraged his students to perform Hajj and Umrah, aiming to lead them from theoretical knowledge to practical application, from mere words to genuine commitment, leaving behind what is prohibited and detestable.

He instilled Islamic manners in his students, setting a living example for them to emulate. Abdullah bin Mas’ud emphasized the importance of honoring hadith, avoiding contradiction, and adhering to the Prophet’s virtues. He encouraged his students to follow the Prophet ﷺ, model their lives after his, and take him as their ultimate example.

With ease and clarity, Abdullah bin Mas’ud spoke, taught, guided, answered questions, corrected mistakes, and rectified misunderstandings. He became a renowned scholar and served as the chief jurist and judge in Kufa, teaching its people, resolving their disputes, and adjudicating their conflicts.

His Passing

Abdullah bin Mas’ud (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) fell ill during the caliphate of Uthman bin Affan, the third rightly guided caliph. Many companions and tabi’un visited him, including Uthman himself, as Abdullah lay on his deathbed. Despite his illness, Abdullah expressed no complaints about his physical pain, only about his sins. His only desire at that moment was the mercy of his Lord.

Abdullah bin Mas’ud (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) passed away and was buried in the Baqi’ cemetery in the year 32 AH, or according to some, 33 AH. He left behind a life filled with blessings, contributing vast knowledge, clear jurisprudence, and beautiful Quranic recitation. His legacy continues to inspire generations until the Day of Judgment, with people emulating his devotion to the Quran and his example in building a strong foundation for the faith.

Alhamdulillah, the series of four articles is now complete.
