The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands. They have forgotten Allah , so He has forgotten them [accordingly]. Indeed, the hypocrites – it is they who are the defiantly disobedient. (Surah at Taubah ayat 67)

Excerpt from Tafseer Fathul Qadiir from Imam asy Syaukani – rahimahullahu Ta’ala

an Nisyan (Forgetting) means at Tarku (abandoning). That is, they abandon what Allah Almighty has commanded them, so Allah Almighty leaves them in terms of His mercy and virtues. Because the attribute of forgetting in essence is not appropriate/true to be attributed to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. So what is attributed here falls under the category of Musyakalah, which is known in Science of Arabic Semantic

Here is an excerpt from the Tafsir al Jami’ al Ahkam al Quran by Imam al Qurthubi – may Allah have mercy on him (Known as Tafsir al Qurthubi):

In this verse, “an Nisyan” (forgetting) means abandonment, meaning they abandon what Allah Almighty has commanded them, so Allah Almighty leaves them in doubt (asy Syak).

There are also those who argue that its meaning is they abandon what Allah Almighty has commanded them as if they forget, so Allah Almighty “forgets” them, meaning He does not reward them.

Qatadah stated that the meaning of “Fanasiyahum” is that Allah Almighty “forgets” their good deeds. Meanwhile, their evil deeds are not forgotten by Allah Almighty (they will still be taken into account).

— End of the excerpt from Tafsir al Qurthubi —

Allah knows best.
