A Journey Through Sahih Muslim:

Al-Lum’ah (The Radiance) in Explaining the Attributes of the Seven (Part 3)

Translated by: Reza Ervani bin Asmanu

The article Al-Lum’ah (The Radiance) in Explaining the Attributes of the Seven is included in the Hadith Explanation Category

Giving respite to a person in financial difficulty or waiving the debt for him was not mentioned in the previous hadith along with the seven categories. This indicates the existence of other categories whom Allah Ta’ala will shade in His shade mentioned in other than that hadith. Al-Allamah Abu Shama Abdurrahman bin Ismail composed a poem about these seven categories, saying:

The Chosen Prophet has said that indeed there are seven
Who are shaded by Allah the Generous with His shade:
A lover (for Allah’s sake), the chaste, a youth (growing in worship), a giver of charity,
One who weeps (out of fear), one who prays, and the leader with his justice.

Ibn Hajar—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “After that, I tracked the hadiths narrated regarding similar matters, and they exceeded ten qualities. I selected seven of them that were narrated with good (jayyid) chains of narration, and I composed them into two verses as a supplement to Abu Shama’s verses, which are:

And add seven more: shading a warrior and helping him,
Giving respite to one in hardship and lightening his burden,
Assisting one in debt and helping a mukatib (slave seeking freedom),
As well as a merchant who is truthful in speech and deed.

As for shading the warrior, it was narrated by Ibn Hibban and others from the hadith of Umar—may Allah be pleased with him. As for helping the mujahid, it was narrated by Ahmad and Al-Hakim from the hadith of Sahl bin Hunaif—may Allah be pleased with him.

As for giving respite to the one in hardship and waiving the debt for him, it is in Sahih Muslim as we mentioned. As for assisting the one in debt and helping the mukatib, they were both narrated by Ahmad and Al-Hakim from the aforementioned hadith of Sahl bin Hunaif—may Allah be pleased with him.

As for the truthful merchant, it was narrated by Al-Baghawi in “Syarh al-Sunnah” from the hadith of Salman… Then I tracked that further and collected another seven, and composed them in two other verses, which are:

And add seven more: grief (for the hereafter) and walking to the mosque,
A disliked ablution (in hardship), then one who feeds from his surplus,
One who takes a right and gives it, then a caretaker (of orphans/widows),
As well as a merchant who is truthful in speech and deed.

Then I tracked that further and collected another seven; however, their hadiths are weak, and I said in the last verse:

Thus making it four sevens (twenty-eight) from the abundance of His favor.

I have included all of them in the book “Al-Amali”, and I dedicated a separate part to it which I titled: “Ma’rifat al-Khisal al-Muwassilah ila al-Zhilal” (See: “Al-Fath”, hadith (660)).

Continued in the next part, In Sha Allah
